Jenny Zhang in conversation with Tommy Pico for MY BABY FIRST BIRTHDAY
We were delighted to host Jenny Zhang to celebrate her most recent poetry collection, My Baby First Birthday, with poet Tommy Pico.
Jenny Zhang’s second poetry collection uses humor and anger to reveal all the ways that beauty, love, and nurturing are warped by oppression. She challenges our notions of innocence and asks why only babies are blameless, the way that racial stereotyping and sexism coincide and reduce women to their body parts, and the idealization of motherhood. Still, in the midst of all the obscenity and hurt and desire, My Baby First Birthday radiates with tenderness and longing for connection. If you missed Jenny Zhang’s conversation with Tommy Pico about the collection, you can watch it here.
