Blending memoir and cultural critique, Belabored offers a bracing examination of the beliefs and myths surrounding pregnant women and motherhood, culminating in an urgent call to entrust women with their own bodies. Lyz Lenz takes on the legal regulation of abortion and birthing practices, medical biases, the erasure of and violence towards POC, fat, incarcerated, and queer mothers, among other things, using feminist theory, medical studies, sociological reserach, and women’s history to break down the narrow cultural myth of the mother figure.
